龙泉大悲寺
Longquan Great Compassion Monastery
简介内容

Longquan Great Compassion Monastery is the first monastic establishment of Chinese Han Buddhism from mainland China in Europe. It is situated in the beautiful city of Utrecht in the “heart” of the Netherlands. Enshrined in its great hall are the Trailokya Buddhas: Śākyamuni Buddha, Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha, and Amitābha Buddha, as well as the Four Great Bodhisattvas: Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, and Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. These four bodhisattvas can be seen as the embodiment of the main spirit of Chinese Buddhism, including compassion, wisdom, vow, and practice.

Early last century, before World War II, Chinese immigrants already embarked on perilous migration journeys in order to settle in Europe. Although most struggled to make a living as low profile labourers, they never left behind traditional Chinese ethics and moralities, nor the expansive history of over 2600 years of Buddhist culture. Meanwhile, they were committed to educating their offspring, helping the second and third generation Chinese immigrants learn Chinese and explore the Chinese cultural heritage. The second and third generation Chinese gradually became active in the middle and upper class European societies. In order to promote Chinese Buddhist culture, in 2014, 56 overseas Chinese jointly acquired a building in the Province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, as the base in preparation for a Buddhist monastery. In total, no less than 150 people participated in the preparatory work for the monastery. They dedicated manpower, financial support, material resources, and mental effort - every contribution for an establishment that is not easy to come by.

The monastery was officially opened and consecrated on the 9th of December in 2015. A number of eminent monks from China and Indonesia led the consecration ceremony. The Mayor of Utrecht and the Chairman of the Dutch Budhhist Union were among a number of distinguished guests from the Dutch political, religious and academic circles present at the consecration ceremony. The monastery is administered by a bhikshuni sangha. With the mission of championing both learning and practice, spreading authentic Buddha Dharma, servicing sentient beings, promoting peace, and purifying the mind, the monastery has become a spiritual refuge for many Chinese and Western followers and friends.
